It’s all too easy to fall into the trap of very kitsch and clichéd children’s furniture when decorating the rooms of little ones, but that’s just not my style at all. I much prefer a modern and minimalist take and think that if you decorate with this in mind, the room outlasts passing trends and fads that they might be into as they grow up meaning much more value for money as you won’t be painting the walls every 2 years!
With the addition of a few smart pieces of furniture and clever design ideas, you can add an effortless touch of luxury to your children’s bedrooms. Here’s some inspiration to get you started.
Leave storybook characters exactly where they are, and instead invest in a print or poster of a more classic nature. Though still child-friendly, I’ve recently spotted so many lovely drawings that I would happily hang in my own bedroom or lounge. Desenio has some of my favourites, I especially like this playful bear on a bicycle – simply add a plain slimline frame and voila! Instant luxury.
I recently discovered the wonderful Pebblechild toy company. Supporting Hathay Bunano makers in Bangladesh, these beautiful organic cotton toys are expertly crafted by hand and guarantee fair and flexible work for their producers. Not only do these toys support a great working initiative, they are also some of the cutest I’ve ever seen. The gorgeous cuddly cotton giraffes come in pink or blue and lend a touch of taste to any little one’s bedroom.
Not only will a dinky little armchair serve as a great spot for children to curl up and read a favourite book or indulge in a bit of drawing, but it will be a great place for you to rest your feet and have a cuddle with them at the same time. Especially handy in nurseries, there’s nothing more convenient than a super comfy armchair for rocking your baby to sleep in. This one by Arlo & Jacob is a personal favourite, featuring stately Queen Anne-style legs and an unparalleled level of comfort. Compact enough to slot into a quiet corner, small armchairs make a fine addition to their room.
Little ones are constantly falling over, so it makes sense to install a cushioned rug in their room at the age when they’re first learning to toddle about. If you invest in a classic style, it’ll continue to look the part for years to come. I love this star-print design which would be perfect for both girls and boys and has a plush texture ideal for playtime on the floor.
